21 Mourning Affirmations – Positively Affirming Life After Loss

Caveat: Fellow bereaved sufferer, this may not be the time to practice mourning affirmations, but they may prove powerful in dampening your pain … in time.

When my mom passed away, someone had sent me a mourning affirmation or quote (I can’t remember).  Well-intentioned, this person just thought that the sentiment could ease my relentless pain and suffering.

But upon reading the message, I felt virtually nothing.  If anything, I experienced an eerie sense of resentment at such a meager attempt to heal my struggling psyche.

I was not ready to work through any pain.  I just wanted to express it — in tears, muffled cries of anguish, screams of lament, and the like.   Upon experiencing my mom’s unexpected death, I abandoned reason, logic, and especially, hope.

As such, I refused to read and think about any purported coping mourning affirmations and uplifting quotes about surviving the death of a loved one.  Such positive affirmations and quotes seemed like applying a band aid to a broken heart, where the band aid is loose and frayed.

Several years have passed since I had to say good bye to Mom, and it is only now that I’m ready to practice mourning affirmations, and read coping with grief and loss quotes.  In this post, I want to share some mourning affirmations that are helping me to continue to work through grief.

But before you read these mourning affirmations, please keep the following in mind:

  • You may not be ready to practice these mourning affirmations.  You’re taking the first steps by reading and thinking about them, but you may not be at the stage where you can say them to yourself on a daily basis.  There is no pressure to do so.  When the time is right, these mourning affirmations will become part of your daily ritual.
  • Repetition is the key when internalizing any affirmation, especially when you’re out of sorts due to bereavement and grief.  Say these affirmations to yourself several times so they can take root in your subconscious.
  • I’ve included an audio of these 21 mourning affirmations at the bottom of the post.  I encourage you to read these affirmations at least twice, and then listen to the audio.  It’s preferable to listen to the audio in a quiet environment with headphones.
  • These mourning affirmations should make you aware about the possibility of living a full life, even without your loved one.  I never thought I could survive one day without my mom.  And while there are struggles each day when waves of grief surface, I do my best to ride out the turbulence.  I’m hoping these affirmations help you settle your own disquietude.
